Big data companies will kick back at it due to the fact that it will likely lower their profit margins substantially. Plus is it something where people will need to write down a string of words as a backup in case they forget the login to this wallet? If so I bet this will equate to quite few in limbo protected identities floating around the web that will never be accessed again. It would be nice if something like this was implemented the day Facebook started forcefully data mining without our permission.

Web 3.0 takes back control from the user perspective by protecting their identity through a blockchain-based, decentralized system and enforcing new incentive mechanisms. In Web 3.0-based models, tokens — a digital representation of an asset- can be used to commoditize data and unequivocally grant its ownership to the respective users — the owner of the private key. This has the potential to take away the monopolistic control that entities such as tech corporations or banks have over big data, and hence benefit the end-user. As much as there are currently implementation and hurdles that ought to be overcome — lack of privacy on a decentralized network and scalability- to achieve such a result, we’re finally on the right track.

Great article! It helps me easily understand about web 3.0.

I have found that web 3.0 is a new good tool for users. I always seek for more information about it so this article helps me a lot.

So excited to a new age of web now and in the future.

Our privacy if very important. What I read in your article is just what we need. To prevent big companies from intruding our privacy, has been tried before with the incognito windows, VPN, and other methods but I think we leave a trace anyway.

In Web 3.0 we would have anonimity, but still many places, like trading online, electronic wallets, etc request a verification of your identity. Is your real information going to be available upon request, for example, if government agencies needed to solve a crime?

Who would store that information?

You said "Once signed, the user is represented by their public key. This keeps their identity secured and unambiguous, while at the same time providing both transparency and pseudonymity on blockchain networks such as ethereum and bitcoin."

My ID would become a number and a private Key. How do I get pseudonymity?

Still way to go, but it looks promising.

for me, the web 3  is coming to do more and has really transformed the internet a lot in ways that one cannot imagine, the web 3 has taken the internet one step ahead, but i  still have some things on this.

1. the aspect of security has not been fully solved because with HTTP sites still out there information can still be stolen.

2. on the aspect of privacy: with the data that you enter into a site is being stored on the server of the site, it means that they can still get your data if they want to.

so general the internet will need more to be done to ensure that it is 100% secure and private, which is an almost impossible task.

now on the aspect of the web 3. the pitfalls include:
1. the creation of too many wallets, accounts, and key phrases.

2. very long process in opening account.

3.complicated verification process when opening new accounts.

i will say these are what kinda makes the web 3 boring and tiring to use, easier ways need to be employed so as to make these processes easier but retaining the use and importance.

i am a very strong and deep use of the web 3 and also of many dapps, which include metamask which is like the most used dapp in a long time coming.

I liked how you explain the evolution of 1.0 to 3.0 on the web. but I want to know if web3 only used for the smart contract of Ethereum blockchain? or can it be used for others like EOS?

thanks

Good article, understandable and easy to interpret, especially for new users of web 3 application, like me.

I see that web 3.0 is a good tool, however, I would like to know more in detail how all this works. You are dealing with one of the most important issues and therefore, the more information and more transparency the better.  This changes the meaning of the Internet and can be very relevant in the future.

Given my inexperience in this area, I can't give you anything new to respect. However, let's have a lot of encouragement for what is coming to you guys!

I have been hearing about Web 3.0 for some time now. It is obviously still taking shape and many people are not even aware what does it mean and stands for. The idea behind it is interesting, but let's see in what direction it will turn in the future. I am afraid that many people tend to have too high expectations for it. It will definitely not save human race :))

I personally do not use many Web 3.0 DApps, since there is not that many of them and since at the time they have no utility for me. Only exception are cryptocurrency wallets, which of course I am using.

Excellent article... Web3 is awesome, the security, trust and ability to own one's data and information and then to make rewards for sharing is too cool.

Problem is the web2 folks don't want to be cut out of the middleman position and lose the 3rd party fees they're accustomed to earning. Imagine not needing banks or insurance companies to transact our businesses. Where today to send cash to a friend in, say, Paris from NY might take days and cost up to 10% or more in fees. This web2 world might not want to lose its earning power just yet- the idea that banks are not needed or that middlemen who are used to making big bucks under the current internet will just lie down and allow web 3 to transform and take away their world as they know it is an enormous obsticle to mass adoption- for sure. For me it's humanity's only option if we are to fix the planet- go Web3! Go!

Just a common Crypto enthusiast.. Wait crypto is not common it's special :)

Web 3.0 will bring in a revolutionary change in the way we use the internet, how our personal data is managed, how content will be controlled or censored. Basically all traditional platforms like Facebook, Youtube, Gmail will move to the Blockchain model which will be decentralised. This sounds great as a concept but will be far from easy to implement due to following challenges:

  • Governement Resistance- As this will free people from control of authority and make it difficult to ban content which the authorities don't like it is bound to face opposition from most governments. This is the main reason why despite 11 years Bitcoin is struggling to find use cases. Blockchain is still not popular with banks and Brave is still not popular.
  • Awareness- Currently a very limited protion of the global population is aware of blockchain. Roughly speaking not more than 5% of people are really aware of blockchain and even from these the majority are not aware that blackchain means more than bitcoin

However despite these issues I am hopeful that sooner or later the world will move to the decentralised web.

web 3 is very good and it has changed the status of the internet in many ways and continue to do so, and since this is the new age of technology i know that many more will be able to come out from this.

also apart from the fact that it is good, it will also enable people to learn more because using the web3 apps is not so easy, and so people will have to learn how to use it and thus it will also help information to spread faster.

But the whole idea of security and privacy, in the long run, is also dependent on the trustworthiness of the company and the group that is in charge of the backend because even if they have private keys most times the pieces of information are stored on the servers and thus can still be reached by the group if they thus wish so.

but in general privacy and security are thus becoming better and also the internet is becoming relatively safer and better.

i am and still using many web3 apps and also will continue to use them because i will surely be moving with the current trend in technology.

Until Web3 is going to be fully adopted, we still need a mass awakening to help with the process and be widely used all around the globe.

I personally use Dapps and Web3 as well, and I am very happy with it, althought it is not fully explored this area of the internet and the crypto! Decentralization is a very good way of breaking up the societal patterns we built in the past hundred years. People need to see and believe that there is another way, even if it's a self-made propaganda! In history we had not one, not two, but a lot self- fulfilling prophecies.

I belive in Web3 and all this crypto-revolution!

If it's a lie, than we need to make it truth, together, united!

When I think of an animity on the Web I'm thinking of protecting not just my credit cards but mostly my intellectual property I at the moment I'm scared to even put any of my ideas on any kind of system as I believe service going to take it for me b**** Facebook Instagram Google and the funny thing is even when you opt out of all these do not tracks And personalized ads, I could be sitting there having a conversation with my mother a very certain topic and then on my phone maybe a day later it will come up and we have even talk devoted on messenger or anything else and still yet they have an ad for me even though I oft out of these personalized ads and collection of my data So this program webpoint a 3 point all is Very near and close to my heart as I don't feel safe in my own home because of this I am a solitude person I live in the country I mostly on the internet to help others and to better myself I don't want these people to have my information is steer me away from Even being online at all and then what I am am I am not a product anymore on this off the great line.I hope in the future that's in the near future that this is possible I've taken the steps to keep my identity anonymous with a VPN and this not yet my Facebook still connected to my computer so they still know who the hell I am helped is a matter if I have VPN free browser tour browser or dot dot go it don't matter they still somehow someway conceive it God information i can't sit there and tell me that just because you have a v p n and to use duck Duck go I don't believe that it gives me anonymity be has these people can literally be watching you watching your screens and I know they do this they have to be doing this and they monitor what I'm doing on dictating Bixby g****** sure they listen for keywords this Is something that me just shut me right off the internet and that is a bad thing for many people in the world cause I have so much give

I live in India, and once I realized something very unusual. I was talking to my mom over phone and I mentioned two items in the conversation with her those I were looking to buy. What happen next is I saw those two items on a webpage as google advertisement. I had never searched about those items on internet and I don't use Voice search services such as Google Assistance or Alexa or Siri. I don't know how things showed up? Was this only a coincidence or my conversation got tracked, I don't know.

Believe me it's not a coincidence, as soon as you install android guess what comes with it preinstalled. And if you have any permission on your phone for for let's say facebook messenger to use the call a friend, or your mom for Facebook. They have a permission to your microphone and camera usually your contact list as well. Google and Facebook aren't the only ones any social platform is doing this even linking has paid ads. My advice if you want your absolute privacy. Go meet the person face to face in the physical with devices no where close to you with your hand over your mouth...lmao. That was a joke....kinda? See if google or facebook has permissions for making telephone calls that means they can listen for keywords and then that will come up on your bestfriends computer when your there chilling with him. That alittle overboard but believe I have no doubt they go that fat

The article was written well and would be very easy to understand even for a new user to the web 3 app.

web 3.0 is good but i don't think that they will be able to achieve what they say they would, yes in the front end it might be achievable but behind closed doors, i don't think we all know what is going there. information and user profiles are all data still stored on the server-side of the wen oner or app developer if he wants to go there to get things he can still do it, the whole project and idea still lies on the trustworthiness of the company that is bringing such projects.

i remember watching a movie some time ago about projects like this where everything is user-centric but at the background, the project just aimed to get as many people to it so that their data would be collected, it was later exposed and the project failed.

to me, the web 3 is a stand towards privacy, security, and anonymity but i don't think that we have gotten there yet, we still have a long and very almost impossible way to go, until your phone or laptop becomes your server things will still be messed up and can get mixed up again.

everybody using a smartphone is in one way or another a web 3 app user, and since i am into a lot of online stuff i will say that i am a high-end web 3 app user.

I think there is a point where we start believing in our own propaganda vs the reality of the market.  Exchanges pay brokerages for traffic.  Microsoft pays for traffic they could give it away as shares if they wanted.  I don't see any reason why decentralized isn't the backup for centralized systems.

Googl is a different matter they could be involved with self sabotage because of the justice department at least some of thier employees may be.

Web3 as a concept doesn't mean that much it's that companies are starting to pay the users that is what I see.

Update

The reason for the removal of Metamask from Google PlayStore as stated by Google is that Metamask violates its policy with regards to crypto mining. However, as we all know, Metamask isn't used for mining. Efforts by the Metamask development team to reinstate the DApp have proved futile.
In other news, Coinbase has also had its DApp removed from the AppStore. I believe other web 3.0 DApps will soon follow suit.

My understanding is Coinbase is being removed from Apple IOS store, not Android Google play store. Either way, this is not good news for many of us.

Yes as said previously building web 3 apps on centralized platforms isn't the solution.. maybe ipfs, btfs and storj platforms needed such action by Apple to push the developers towards using decentralized storage.

One of the biggest pitfalls of web 3.0 is decentralised apps built on web 3.0 being at the mercies of tech giants such as Google and Apple. Currently this duopoly controls most mobile DApps on Google PlayStore and the AppStore respectively and have the power to determine if a user can access web 3.0 DApps or not. Such a duopoly isn't good for users at all as it indirectly concentrates power in the hands of a few people and violates one of the fundamental problems blockchain technology aims to solve - user independence - regardless of wallets, signatures and smart contracts.

0n 29th December, 2019, the Metamask DApp was removed from Google PlayStore for very frivolous reasons - susceptibility to spam attacks. As you can see, this is very false but Google went ahead anyway with the ban because it had the power to. The crypto community and web 3.0 creators should look to creating their own platforms or app stores for housing all web 3.0 DApps to prevent incidents like this. With this case for instance, all the Metamask android users will definitely lose serious amounts of money in the form of tokens, especially if they don't have a desktop version.

If you give me security in the form of a wallet, a smart contract to execute transactions and signatures to authorise them but my existence depends on Google or Apple's allowance on their platform, then they still control me, period. Web 3.0 should move beyond that.

For other Web 3.0 DApps, I use the Magnum and Blockchain wallets.
