Worldwide interest in renewable energy options has given rise to a rash of new wind turbine designs. Some of the most recent models on the market are vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs), which manufacturers claim are quiet, efficient and perfect for residential energy production, especially in urban environments. Although, Norway commissioned a study of wind power in Denmark which was concluded to have high production costs.

How can we reduce production costs and continue manufacturing vertical axis wind turbines for our green future?

I know of a developer here in Montreal who built the largest vertical wind turbine . He has a patent and biz plan

We can reduce the production costs by maybe using some cheaper material or recycled ones, thus improving our green future and making it a cheap one too.

According to me if a good market is created and if the popularity of the wind energy can be flourished then the cost can be reduced. Nevertheless, special care should be taken to reduce the foundation and installation costs.

We would have to look into a material and production model that reduces cost in all aspects, or one aspect greatly. I am not given enough information as to what they are made of and how to give a more detailed response than that.

What materials are currently being used in the production of vertical turbines? Is there a less expensive material that will do the same job? Mass production would reduce the price over time. Getting the work out on these vertical turbines would create a higher demand which should result in higher productions.

In my opinion the best way to drive down production cost would be to out source as much of the labor as possible to Chinese manufacturers. These same manufacturers could also connect you with raw material suppliers available locally minimalising shipping costs. Government subsidies for green technology are also a short term solution to driving down production costs until you can scale production.

I think as more people use them the price will go down then there will be more money to build more with the savings. It might be possible to take donations or have fundraisers for the cause. People do it for everything else. Also compare prices between the different types being built and see which is cheaper then go with it.

With continuing research regarding production of VAWTs, cost effective solutions may present themselves, whether it be in the form of utilizing already existing VAWT power to help sustain the production facilities, or the use of cheaper, yet durable materials. If renewable energy takes off, by having a larger manufacturing facility and the ability to automate production will also help to cut costs.

A way to reduce costs is to look at using wind energy on a smaller scale building smaller devices rather than large city powering sized wind turbines.

Some one makes a good point, when mass production occurs most of the time prices will come down. No doubt, turbines are going to become in high demand as some countries move to renewable sources. With that, we should see prices go down at production should go up.

Which designs are being used? There are major drawbacks to older designs. Upgrades to a newer design may be pricey now, but could greatly reduce production costs later. spend money to make money.

In order to keep producing vertical axis wind turbines, we should continue to grow them in scale so that we get the most energy per wind turbine. Doing this should decrease the price overall of the energy.

Is it possible to use recycled material to create the wind turbines? And perhaps create a model that is as efficient but smaller so that less material to make them is used and they become easier to install. Or the opposite make them slightly larger-more efficient but use less of them to help production costs. It's not just the production of them that cost more money but also the shipping and installment of them.

Their cost will come down appreciably once they are mass produced on a production line scale equivalent to the automobile industry. The smaller ones are easier to manufacture and could cost less than conventional ones if produced on a large scale. Maintenance costs could be less because the generator sits on the ground, rather than at the top of a 100-meter tower, and thus is easier to access.

What aspects of these specific turbines makes the production cost more expensive? Maybe if we had more detail as to what was making the cost so high, and maybe even production comparison to other more cost effective varieties, we could figure a way to lower or simplify the production cost. The most blanketed answer I would have would be to evaluate the production of cheaper costing turbine varieties and see where the difference lies, maybe a bit of blending of production processes between other types and the vertical axis wind turbine would render the production more cost affective.

I can make a guess and say that the thing makes Turbines expensive is itself material and the complexity of the Vertical axis turbine

Do you have some more details of what type of production cost that are high? Does this include logistics and maintenance cost?
