Hello Crowdholders!

There has been a rather interesting turn of events in both Brave’s and Google’s development department that we think is worth your attention.

Let’s kick things off with the changes Google is planning to implement. Under the guise of security improvement, Google is changing the API based upon which extensions receive web content. While a pretty noble concept, it also means that ad blockers are going to be affected. Many of the popular blockers, such as uBlock or Ghostery are depending on this API. While Adblock Plus is fine, it has an ad whitelisting option that companies can pay for to go around its blocking capabilities that Google seems fond of using.

On the other hand, as per the previous task, Brave puts the ‘AD’ into ‘ADvance’, pushes privacy of its users above everything else and tries to make the ad-experience as painless as possible. Their new browser engine built in Rust is almost 70 times faster at ad blocking than ever before! It is ready to download via Brave’s dev channel and it also uses a newer and more effective ad blocking algorithm.

Sometimes it feels quite creepy that the thing you were searching for is 5 minutes later promoted in ads. Luckily, with Brave browser on your side, you make those ads non-existent or receive BAT token for turning them on. Either way, it is your choice, as it should be.

Questions for you:

  • Do you use an adblocker on your default browser?

  • What was the weirdest targeted ad that you have received?

  • Did an ad ever made you go and buy the product?

Still haven’t given Brave a try? Support CH and download it here

We look forward to your thoughts!
Cheers,

Crowdholding Team

I don't use an ad blocker but I think that my browser is pre installed with an ad blocker, because I only receive neccessry notifications or adverts, I think that the most weird ads I have seen are  those concerning sex drugs I really find it super irritating and weird. I can't remember if I have bought something due to an ad, but I have indirect bought something due to them. They can be quite disturbing sometimes.

I came here to check up on some cool designs to comment on them but so far, none. It's apparent that almost all Crowdholders aren't good at graphic designing. Let's try and link some graphic designers with this project.

I use Ghostery on my phone but Brave on the laptop. After using my Bug Assault (a house fly killer that uses grains of salt), I started getting ads for them in my FB feed. I don't think I have ever bought anything based on the ads I get.

Questions for you:

  • Do you use an adblocker on your default browser? I use AdBlock Plus on Chrome but don't need to when I use Brave.

  • What was the weirdest targeted ad that you have received? I let my daughter on my computer once and got followed around with womens shoes ads for a whole day.

  • Did an ad ever made you go and buy the product? Not really, though they have reminded me about things I already wanted to buy.

Do you use an adblocker on your default browser? - I do use it but due to nature of lot of sites asking you to take it down sometimes, its sometimes somewhat useless. I only have problem with popups not display ads. Websites need their revenue and i have no problem with that What was the weirdest targeted ad that you have received? - Probably dating site ads, since i never visit any sites like that nor porn. I Can't think of anything else really, mostly its been pretty accurate really. Did an ad ever made you go and buy the product? - It has in the past for sure, it might been a sale or game - most of the time ad comes after ive already purchased the product so kinda in vein. I do want to emphasize that this is very rare occurrence in general.

I do use an ad blocker on my default browser which is the brave extension. I would have to say that the weirdest targeted ad that I have received while browsing the net would have to be an ad for roast beef sanwhiches. It was weird because me and my roomate had just been talking about roast beef a few minutes before i started browsing, so I felt like my conversation was being listened to! I can not recall ever seeing an ad that was convincing enough to make me want to go out and buy the product it was advertising. Ads are usually overlooked by myself personally.

I have not been a fan of "Ad blocking" entirely, cos It was beneficial to me at some point in life. But that does not mean that one should not have the liberty to choose what to view and what not to view. I have not used any ad blocker, I quite restrict the site I visit and have not really gotten any weird ads, not that I can remember, most ads I have gotten are either related to a site I have previously visited, or their possible substitute. Thanks.

My weirdest target ad was to buy a wedding ring but I am already married lmfao I wish I could have 7 wife but it’s not aloud in my country 😂. sometimes I use chrome, in the case of chrome, I use an adblocker that comes with the Bittube extension. In other occasions, I use brave, for more delicate data and in Brave, I use full shields except for web domains that I want to enable. As for the experience with adblockers, I personally believe that they can be great, For example, in the case of less experienced navigators, it can help them to reach the desired content. However, malicious actors know about the properties of personalized advertising making up the content of questionable quality. The strangest thing I received was an advertisement that offered "magnet" coins for registration and then turned out to be from a society of dubious reputation. I never came across the ad or the website again.

Have never blocked or used adblocker before because I do think that sometimes these advert do reminds me of somethings I wanted to buy or research on so I do intentionally leave them running on my browser despite that I don't get any rewards for that, however I have received some weirdest adverts several times especially on crypto and HYIPs in fact to be sincere I had fell victims of one of such hyips and I lost over $800,I stupidly do some scratch research on the hYIP and after I think I have done well and read some or a lot of testimonies and try to follow some so called early investors and I put my hard earned money and after three months, nothing was received after a lot of letters with a lot of information circulating about the program they sent emails that USSEC was the one given them problem and when they settled with them they will send our returns after months they closed than the website and nothing heard about them again.

A lot of these advertisements deceive you to either commit your time or money,it depends on whatever the advertisers want to achieved sometimes to drive traffic to their site and sometiimes phising sotes but majorly or ultimately your monies is the target or to get referral for crypto advert or something but by and large the experiences I had was cruel.

I only used them as  reminders because I works online a lot sometimes I forget something I wanted to do.

I have my own words.

No, i have no adblocker until i found brave browser.. Now say goodbye to annoying ads. There are many ads the i i've been received but the most weirdest one is the pornsite ads. Very very annoying. No, i have never convinced to buy a product.

1- yes, i'm using adblocker because it take time to load page and take a lot my internet data 2- seeing some not related sex ads when browsing with my child make me not happy 3- if an ads look interesting and what i'm looking for i'll buy them on spot!

I use Brave in combination with uBlock-origin, cookie autodelete and https-everywhere add-ons for a few months now. Since then I have a lot better browsing experience, faster site loading and nearly no ads. Some banners remain. So I don't waste time by clicking on ads, which mostly redirect to spammy sites or otherwise to Amazon. If I have a need I search for it with presearch.org (there I use duckduckgo, but any other search engine works) and earn cryptocurrency for searching. At the moment I have accumulated just around 200 PRE, you need at least 1000 to withdraw. I prefer to control my web experience instead of being bombarded by ads. The downside, sometimes I might miss some new hot gadget. On the other hand I am frugal, so I don't want all the gadgets.

I don't remember any weird ads, but I can just imagine, how embarrassing it could become if for example you use a synced browser on the workplace or while with friends (or vlogging) and a not so appropriate ad shows up.

So on your third question, no I never bought anything from an ad. I opened a promo online bank account, but only after I had done my due diligence. I would go so far to say that affiliate marketers won't make a lot from my purchases, because if I am interested in a purchase, I will save a bookmark to the website link, then do some research, let some days pass by, rethink and sometimes decide to buy later, for example next month.

I've been using an ad blocker for as long as I've had a computer. I don't have anything against advertising, but when some ads are potentially malicious and harmful or are outright scams or even just plain misleading, I started using ad blocking software. The weirdest targeted ad I'd have ever received was a sex toy for pregnant women advertisement, even tho I am a man and was still alone in my teenage years. Once I did actually enjoy an ad, when I was looking for a spare bicycle part, more specifically - a derailleur hanger, and I was pretty frustrated not finding what I needed. One day, when I was casually browsing the web, I came across a news website, which needed for the ad blocking software to be disabled to be accessible. While the ad block was disabled, I was browsing and I came across an ad selling bicycle parts. I went to the online store to check and there was the part - just the right one and best of all it was inexpensive on that store and it had fast shipping.

I use an ad blocker all the time. There was a time I had to turn it off so I could access a site. I got ads on electric cigarettes and vaporizers which was pretty annoying. See the previous day, I had been diagnosed with cold intolerance and I spent a considerable time researching on the net ways to stay comfortable on cold months including humidifiers. To have my search history used that way was not a good experience.

I have never bought a product in ads. I don't even click on it to find out more on the product.

the weirdest ad I have seen will be the one about penis enlargement, I was so confused and shocked when I saw the pop-up ad on my screen.

An ad has made me research about a couple of products, buy going as far as buying it is more than just the ad, but the amount and if I have the money to buy it at that time, so I will say a NO to this.

I do use an adblocker -- Adblock -- and as you stated, I do still receive ads. Jumping to the last question, I have bought a few items from ads BUT they were always from the targeted ads from something I was already looking for. Creepy but in some instances I would rather just buy from them rather than continue searching. The weirdest thing I had been targeted was an overseas ad for dog toys. I had been looking for treats and a heavy duty toy for my bulldog. The ad came came up and had a few heavy duty toys with a picture of dogs behind them. The toys were of a heavy duty material but were not meant for dogs. They were of the adult toy variety. Although I did laugh and show my wife, I was also glad my daughter hadn't been the person browsing for dog toys.

The Xbox one's controller ad on 'Loot.co.za' .The thing is i do have an xbox one ,i think that their data mining services noticed my web clicks and personalised the Ad for me. I did not need the product but i got the Ad. Yes an Ad made me go and buy the product. I remember back last year in 2018 ,i saw an Ad on Facebook MarketPlace about an xbox 360 Slim .I was intrested in it. So i requested a meetup and bought it.

  • Do you use an adblocker on your default browser?

Yes, I do and i think in the world of internet it is impossible to work without using it.

  • What was the weirdest targeted ad that you have received?

When you are searching on internet and then after sometime you will notice on other visited sites that you will see the similar kind of advertisement which always shock you for the start but if you know how internet and how they steel ur data to take an advantage is always weid. The most i really hate is the pronographic ads, most of the faucet sites or other sites have more ads on the dating or porn sites ads which is very weird and you will never know when or on which site they will pop up.

  • Did an ad ever made you go and buy the product?

No, I dont trust those site i always check the target site name on the ads,and if i want to check i open a new tab and try to look for it and a strange thing that sometime those are not authentic which i noticed. So in this era or internet you should atleast know what you are doing or u will never know how many ppl will have ur data in there hand and getting profit for it.

Before using Brave I used Mozilla Firefox (I still have and use Mozilla sometimes; actually I have Chrome, Opera, and Microsoft Edge installed too, bit rarely use those). I used adblockers on Mozilla many years, but at some point a lot of third party application started to malfunction, so I uninstalled all. b) What was the weirdest targeted ad that you have received? Honestly I don't know. I tend to ignore all the kind of publicity, so I don't pay that much attention to the ads that are "presented" to me. c) Did an ad ever made you go and buy the product? No. Ever. That I recall. Who knows, maybe sometime I bought something, in the middle of all the useless stuff I buy, that I saw on ads. And maybe my subconscious made me want to buy it. Now, click in some ad on the internet and go to one site and buy a product. No, never.

No - I use chrome. And while I don't like the approach Google uses with ads, browser, and data, I also don't trust third party extensions all too much either. I just try to ignore ads altogether, as a result.

What was the weirdest targeted ad that you have received?

You know, I think I've received some ads for products that I've never searched or browsed for, but have mentioned to people in conversation within earshot of my phone. That's just creepy.

I can't remember what it was, and to be fair it was related to other things I had been shopping for, but still ... Creepy.

Did an ad ever made you go and buy the product?I

Iwish I could say no. Although it probably has. I think the most effective ones have been when a price drops on an item I was considering.

Looking forward to seeing continued progress with Brave's browser. With any luck, it will replace my use of chrome!

Brave has already a built in ad blocker and I use addon for the same with Firefox.

I am a programmer and always look for best resources in the form of video lecture or textbook to increase my knowledge. Once I had looked for a video tutorial and after that I was annoyed by the advertisment related to the same tutorial. Wherever I was going on Internet, I was seeing that annoying ad.

Yes, I have purchased some items but not blindly. First of all, I research about a product and for the best deal through which I can get that product with lesser price. Sometimes Advertisments are good and you get great products and sometimes its worse. So, its better to research before spending your money.

3. I buy products or join websites that I see in ads all the time. That's how I found both Brave and Crowdholding.

I don't use any ad blocker add-ons, only the standard features that come by in the browser. Pop-up blocker option is good but by turning that on a no. of other websites do not work that require the pop-ups to be enabled. The ads, yes i did buy a few times. But i no longer buy the products directly from the ad. If i like the product then i would research a bit on amazon and other ecommerce sites, as mostly likely the ones giving the ad may be just a copy cat of the main brand and the quality may not be the best. Also price wise it may cost higher at times. Ads within websites are ok, i am always wary of the pop-up or pop-under ads, which are mostly never used by the good brands.

I use several browsers so I have them on and off.  On my PC it is off on my main browser.  I have  4 browsers installed.

I don't remember what the add was but I had an advertisement that was flagged by my anti virus software when I was trying to find advertising to distribute with my software.  I found that strange.

Yes I have "bought" financial services from an advertisement.  Seems that many give away free money.  Maybe it's a sign of a financial bubble or a change in Tek.

1. Do you use an adblocker on your default browser?

No, because I use Brave. There's, therefore, no need for an ad blocker. Prior to that, I didn't have any ad blocker.

2. What was the weirdest targeted ad that you have received?

Video Games. I hardly play games or visit game websites on my laptop so I found it rather weird when I kept being bombarded with video game ads. I don't think anybody used my laptop either. I love soccer and so if I had seen soccer ads that wouldn't have been a problem but mystery game ads, horror game ads, shooting games and similar ones were really a turnoff.

3. Did an ad ever make you go and buy the product?

No. Not once. I'd rather visit the website and buy the product myself instead of an ad suggestion.

Don't listen to me because of who I am, I'm nobody like everone else.

I don't use an adblocker but I do have the Brave browser which I use some of the time but not all the time just because chrome has all my passwords saved and I'm too lazy to switch and have to remember them all to log in lol.

The ads that seem strangest to me are the 'retargetting' ads which I get all of the time. Mostly I seem to get ads for things which I've literally just bought and I'm thinking "really? like I'm going to buy the same thing twice in one day?". Also I looked at the Bentley website once just for car porn dreaming about being rich and now I am always getting ads from them even months later but good luck to them because unless Bitcoin hits £1 million and I hold all the way I'll never be able to afford one of those things.

I'm sure adverts have made me buy products before at some point but I can't think of any examples so I guess not often.

I switched to Brave following the previous Brave task.  I'd been putting it off, but after only a few weeks you couldn't pay me to go back.  :)

I hadn't used an adblocker before.  Partially because I have and do still (a little) create content for ad revenue - so kind of disagreed with them.  That said, ads are annoying, and I sure don't miss the intrusive ones as a content consumer.  The Brave ones are alright to be fair.

I had a "weird" one recently after completing the Afrocenchix task here at CH, and then Facebook started showing me their sponsored posts.  I was like "I know I've seen that somewhere..." :D

Back in the day when Google ads were contextual, i.e. relavent to a websites content - I probably did buy stuff via them.  As soon as they switched to having it that the same (high paying) ads followed you around everywhere (credit cards, mobile phone carriers, etc), I just blocked them all out from that point forwards (mentally).  If I go to a fishing website (for example) I want ads for fising gear, not ads for GoDaddy... :/

I've probably bought a few things due to Facebook ads though.  Not a huge Facebook fan, but the adverising model is pretty tight.

I should imagine Brave is particularly useful from an advertisers perspective for targetting a crypto-savvy audience...

Do you use an adblocker on your default browser? Yes, I use Adblock Plus on Chrome. What was the weirdest targeted ad that you have received? An ad for a Gulfstream get on YouTube. I'm not sure how they determined I would be in their target market. Did an ad ever made you go and buy the product? No, never. My mind usually automatically dismisses ads before I even consciously recognize them.

Yes, an ad blocker is part of the system installed when I bought my laptop. But you can easily lift up the block by going to the setting and change it. I am aware that Chrome is being compared a lot by the browser Brave but i haven't tried the Brave yet. I am still learning the new craze of cryptocurrency . Perhaps, later i will try Brave and earn tokens.

Do you use an adblocker on your default browser? Yes, but not always. As for example I turn it off when watching YouTube content of smaller publishers in order to support them or when reading high quality online news paper to support them as well. What was the weirdest targeted ad that you have received? Ads of far right politician, that I never supported, googled, liked any post related with them or even shared one interest. Did an ad ever made you go and buy the product? Actually no, but I had ads related to politicians that made me check out their website.

Questions for you:
Do you use an adblocker on your default browser?
If I use adblocker a few times but Brave is my main browser for a while
What was the weirdest targeted ad that you have received?
In general, the ads are never very specific, only somewhat indicative.
Did an ad ever made you go and buy the product?
Yes but not in a direct way but as informative. I want to say that I did not click and buy directly but that I stayed with the idea I informed and then buy another day.

I do now. I just downloaded Brave and thought Id give it a spin and see what it's all about. Although Im not certain how it works...I feel like it's worth a try. Okay so everyone is familiar with the sneaky tactics Google uses to invade our privacy in order to sell us merch and appeal to our likes. One time I was having a conversation with a good friend of mine pertaining to another friend that was having some substance abuse problems. After a lengthy conversation with my buddy I went to use my laptop to check on a Amazon order. Well....the suggestive ads decided to show me countless ads on books showing the step by step procedure to obtain, manufacturing, selling and using a particular drug. While it wasnt embarrassing...it was certainly creepy. I will bave to admit that at times the ads shown are highly effective. Theres been more than one occasion where an ad flashed across my screen reminding me that I wanted to purchase that and I did just that at that exact moment.

  • Do you use an adblocker on your default browser? My default browser is now Brave, which takes care of it for me, but prior to using Brave yes I always used Ad blockers in Chrome!

  • What was the weirdest targeted ad that you have received? There's been too many to count. Anytime you use Google with Chrome it stores everything you search for and starts target marketing any products almost immediately. One of the worst was mens enhancement pills when I was searching for mens Vitamins.

  • Did an ad ever made you go and buy the product? I don't think so, at least I can't remember doing so!

- I have adblocker on my default browser because I don't want to see annoying ads on several websites that I visit.

- because I use adblocker I don't find weird ads

- I never go and buy a product from ads which I saw on the website. Because these ads do not interest me.

My default browser is chrome. No i never used adblocker but blocked pop ups. The most weirdest targeted ad for me was Internet and phone service by Verizon. IT used to pop in the middle of the screen and was annoying when i used to work on something. Not a single ad made me buy their product so far. Recently i switched to brave browser and i am free from those nuisance. it shows the number of ads blocked and it is surprising.

My default browser is Internet Explorer. No, I did not download an adblocker, but I configured my settings so that pop-ups are blocked. I could not think of any weird ads that I encountered, but I sometimes get notifications that I've won in a raffle that I di not remember joining, so I just ignore and move on. As to ads enticing me to buy a product, it depends. If it's a need and that ad sort of reminds me of that need, then I will buy it. If it's something that I do not need, I will either skip the ad or just let it play if its a short one.

I am excited about the future of all crypto currency.

I use an adblocker and a raspberry pi-hole.

The weirdest targeted ad I received was for a barrel of lube on sale at $3500.00

No, this particular ad did not make me make a purchase. Other ads have made me research products and making a purchase.

I left the ads on the brave browser and receive horrible fashion ads. Also many crypto debt card ads. I will turn the ads off and donate my brave coins.

Hmm they say the ads that pop up are based on your previous searches. Wonder what you were searching to get an ad for $3500 lube! Lol

pi-hole is a good source to block it but I think they are available just for Linux distributors. As once I used Linux and that is how I know about it. but if there is any way we can implement it on windows as well, then please share how to do it.

yes I used to use adblocker first, not only because of annoying ads, but also very helpful from surfing disruptions. and now Brave has become my default browser for surfing for a while now, so I don't use adblockers from third parties anymore. for now brave is very helpful to stream ads that are very insignificant and disrupt my comfort. tanks to brave

My phone is an Android so my default browser is Google chrome. I do not use an ad blocker. Not sure of weirdest targeted ad though I received a few for online k-12 school school . Also for foreign airlines.when an ad pops up for something I was actually shopping for, then I have clicked the ad & did some comparison shopping, but haven't purchased due to the ad. I do have Brave & use it occasionally.  Still waiting for the launch of Brave paying to view ads on my Android phone. Then I will use Brave more often.

I use Adblock time and again. Recently, I have switched over to Brave. Happy with it, but still not figured out / or it doesn’t work to import favorites from neither Firefox, Safari nor Chrome I was searching for an economic air ticket and I had pop ups from Qatar Airways and Emirates later. No, I don’t go buying because of pop up ads. I don’t like to be forced.
