For me I like apps that teaches me the grammar first then I start learning different words and phrases, so I think you should make a grammar category so the person can understand why this sentence is written this way and not another. But if I have to choose between those categories I will definitely go with culture.

You should add conversations videos, like in the caffee or some shopping place, it can be marketplace too. Or it can be some easy understanding stories with animations. Also you can use pictures of items to prepare videos for the beginners. Also you can make videos about some famaous songs with it's lyrics.

I choose Culture - history, cooking, travel, sports - (Football, Formula 1, etc)

in my opinion , culture and history have a large contributions on introducing a foreign country .

direct engagement is also important to stimulate learning on anything

Culture I think would make it to the top of the list. How well can you understand a native language if you don't understand the culture. It's also a submersive area of language that will allow you to learn a language in a way that you can relate to and feel comfortable with. If I'm a sports guy I don't want to learn a language through the art scene and vise versa. If arts my gig I'm not going to fare well learning sports talk. However, if these are things that you already are interested you are going to be able to simply spend time on the language aspect and hopefully this will help permeate the use of that language into other facets of your life.

I think the best answer to this question isn't my preference, but more about what is aligned with your strategy.

Culture / history videos might be aligned if you're interested in supporting a cultural understanding of the countries where the languages are spoken. If your users will be doing any in depth communication with native speakers, understanding cultural points of view will enhance communication in addition to knowing the language.

Additionally, there might be countries or contexts where knowing current events is important, which would be a good case for news videos.

And so on for each of the options. I'd suggest creating an empathy map (https://www.ideo.com/blog/build-your-creative-confidence-empathy-...) of typical users you're targeting and figure out what types of vidoes makes the most sense to your target demographic.

What it come to learning a new language, entertainment is one sure way to do that. Watching movies, comedy, cartoon, drama, short series, or any form of entertaining material in foreign language gets my attention and speed in picking up the language.

I believe that the best and most entertaining way to learn a language is through series that deal with everyday life. You learn not only the language, but also the way to express yourself, while having fun watching a series. On the other hand, series are short stories that don't take much time out of your life.

Mindfulness and meditation are new ages one of the most popular interest, you could publish many kind of video about it. You can publish educating videos, training videos, health tips videos and music video about the meditation/mindfulness/yoga. I am sure many peoplewould watch those videos.

Everyone watching videos everyday and usually travel, sports and cooking videos wathcing millions of time because those video too popluar today.

Business videos are popular too but i think the entertaining ones would be way better.

You can publish daily news videos but you should choose the best and most important ones, otherwise it would be nothing for you because there are 1000s of news video channels and they are publishing all news, we have to search and choose the best ones. So you should publish 3-4 videos for the biggest news not more.

You can also think about live videos in your next steps as well.

Pets. How to take care of pets, how to train pets, funny cat and dog videos, special foods they will enjoy, famous pets. The top-voted videos on Reddit.com are often funny cat or dog videos. Pets would be a popular topic for wiwildo, in my opinion.

Animated stories As animated short films. Many people like animated content. It is not only for children. Adults also like to see animation stories. And I think it would be ideal to learn another language and at the same time be entertaining.

I would add the following categories;

Sports- it will have a large fan base, and each game has the same universal rules so this could be a good foundation to add learning a new language on.

Kids/Cartoons: a set of videos curated specifically towards teaching young children.

Science/Learning- similar to the Discovery channel with an emphasis on gaining knowledge about the world around us.

I actually watch local news, cooking shows and watch local cartoons whew I travel. When I use the language, it is easier to learn than when it is only memorised in the classroom.

Culture for me would be the best place to start in my opinion as language revolves around culture and there is also so much variety within that. I still have no real foreign language experience apart from the holidays I went on and from what I had learnt in school.

I know there is many different language learning apps out there but I've never used one, so something like this would be ideal to fit around my busy lifestyle.

I want to offer my recent experience as I just 3 years ago started to learn a new language.

For me actually none of your 4 categories are the fastest way to get into a new language. It depends though if you want to learn a language, which is quite similar to your native language, for example Italian/Spanish or English/Dutch/German can quite easily managed. But for an European language speaker to learn lets say Chinese, Japanese you are maybe not able to start outright with news, business, culture or self development. First you have to learn some new characters...

Ok now I want to tell from my experience: first I watched music videos, you learn something of the culture and as the refrain repeats, you have plenty options to hear the (strange) words again. Than I needed to learn to read the characters and to learn some basic words, which I did through some free apps, I also tried a game app. After that I returned to some of the music videos and searched for the lyrics which I then translated word for word, and after that I tried to get the whole meaning of the sentences. For a whole song, this could take even a few hours, but I learned a lot in the process. When I was quite proficient, I started to watch soap operas, there the vocabulary is not enormous, what makes it recommended for learning. Your 4 categories would than come later one, in my opinion.

Culture for sure! Lots of people don't follow the news. Business is limited. Self development can get too personal, but culture covers such a broad range of topics & interests so that's definitely the way to go! Everyone can find something culturally interesting. It's easier to learn new things when the student is interested in the subject.

I would be interested in culture topics. Topic with interesting content. For me personally if I would have to choose between those already mentioned I would choose traveling. I think that it is also topic that would be interesting for general public, almost everyone likes to travel and listen stories about travels and foreign countries :) History also seems appealing to me. In any case I think that most important thing is that the video topic would be covered by excellent narrator. Even topic that at first glance seems boring, can be very interesting if the person who is speaking about them makes them interesting. And also the other way around, I have heard some terrible speakers/narrators which could make even interesting topics boring to listen to :)

Culture! Videos on the culture portrayed by the speakers of the foreign language helps me best. English is my first language. However, while learning French I grasped a lot of it quickly by watching documentaries on their cuisines, sports teams, cities, transportation systems, education system, human interpersonal relationships and communication in general. I can only moderately speak French but learning from videos on the culture of foreign people is the best way to learn a foreign language in my opinion. - One major topic I would like to add to the list is the ARTS and ENTERTAINMENT. Movies, films, songs, plays, poems, podcasts, video games and live stage performances in foreign languages can really help in learning foreign languages and videos on all the above listed examples can go a long way in achieving this objective.

I would like to include videos on digitalization, cryptocurrencies ... I also like the possibilities of TED talks. In this way it is encouraged that you can learn the language while you acquire another type of knowledge. On technology and Digital with an easy level would be useful.

It's well known that immersion is the best way to learn a language. Of the categories listed, I believe Culture would best represent the experience one would obtain through immersion. News would also be important as would hearing people discuss their opinions on different topics in the news. By having these categories, you have two broad areas to immerse the user into. Business on the other hand, does not seem like a topic that would be of interest to most. At least not without a reason. If someone were trying to learn a language in order to do business with or in that country, perhaps then. Mindfulness also seems a bit heavy of a topic. That may work for more of an advanced category. It's hard enough to meditate in ones own language. Some categories which might be considered would be: Entertainment, Comedy and Pop Culture. These categories are popular in any culture, and are generally universally understood concepts.

I would like to start learning foreign languages ‚Äč‚Äčin a way that articulates the everyday conversation and needs.

Because I think that first self-confidence is self-expression when learning a foreign language.

However, the key point is to be in that language continuously over the long term, perhaps throughout our lives!
Using the language, making it an important part of our lives, even we have to make it a way of life.
Grammar: A sound grammar knowledge is important. But this grammar should be simple, because if it happens to be excessive, it prevents people from learning languages ‚Äč‚Äčand causes hatred against language.

Add film subtitles to the learning sections:

Words, expressions, actions and situations, with a systematic events cycle can be made more permanent in our minds.
add word games : Words will become more permanent in mind.

But the most effective way to learn the language is to go to that country.
(You must bring that country into the app)

Personally i'm not sure if I'd be hugely interested in any of those categories, they all seem quite serious to me and if you want to keep the learning process engaging and also fun i would suggest lightening the catergories up a little bit. but here are some of my suggestions:

I think the first suggestion i would make is that i would add sports as an extra category. I do not really consider sports as culture and many people who have cultural interests are not sports fans. So your fifth category could be Sports, theres so many different sports and sporting events and compettitions that you could cover in this topic.

Also what about a category called "just for fun"or something like that - it could be anything really, maybe people teling jokes, comedians, funny viral videos. I think if people were laughing and feeling positive whilst watching the videos that the information might stick a bit better too.

"Music"could also be another category- If you were learning German for example yu could hear some German musicians talking or listen to the songs in German, You could hear Native speakers talking about to concerts they had been to.

"Fiction" people could read audio books or tell local stories or fairy tales in the native language.

"the Quiz"people could ask general knowledge questions and then the user could try to answer, either by multiple choice or verbally.

Most of your suggestions fall under the ENTERTAINMENT category. They didn't list that though.

Don't listen to me, listen to the data and research.

I love small conversational videos to learn foreign languages by seeing and repeting them. I've learned some level of German using Dualingo, they have interactive options.

As I said conversational videos, that will work the best. Let people view and try as per different situations and contexts, because video content is more mmemorable than anything nowadays.

Of course Culture video (specially travel) in your 4 categories is the most effective to learn foreign languages. But I think Cartoon including music is the easiest way to learn and can be accessed very easily regardless of age and gender.

Why don't you add Cartoon ?

When I tried to learn a foreign language I had problems in every category like News, Business, and culture because every category has its own words that are being used only in that field of category.

I mainly watched cartoons as they mostly have simple and daily life used words and it helps allot. Once you have some knowledge of that language you can start watching different programs and shows as it will help allot.

Pop Music. The way parts of it can can stuck in your head, learning pop music you already know if a foreign language makes it so you are sure to be repeating it in your head. Food! Talk to me about the food of another country so I can order something from an authentic street cart and know what it is before I bite into it! Sex. Walk me through some of the sexual etiquette and culture of the country in the language I'm learning. Teach me a few phrases that let someone know I'm flirting. Medical care. Teach me how to make sure someone knows I have type 2 diabetes, or a slipped disk, or any other technical language I might need for a medical emergency interaction. Drugs. Is weed legal in the country I'm learning about? What are the local drugs of choice and the etiquette around taking them?

For a bit of fun factor, could be interesting to learn various famous movie quotes and scenes in other languages.  Things that most people will already be familiar with, but in another language.  You could start with the main quote, "No, Luke, I am your father..."  (for example) and then go further by teaching/translating that whole little scene.  Most everybody loves movies.

Beynd that, content geared towards relationships, and international couples perhaps.  Personally speaking the only time(s) I've ever  tried to learn a new language, it's been to either try and impress, or communicate better with, a lady from foreign lands... :D
